How Diversity Impacts Our Work

Most relationships between Pacific Islander entities and the U.S. government are defined by a history involving wars and colonization.

These relationships give rise to a complex web of immigration statuses that impact the ability of Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders to access vital services.

As an unincorporated territory, Guam is represented in Congress by a delegate who is not allowed to vote on the floor but may vote on procedural matters and in House committees.  Those born in Guam are considered U.S. citizens.  Those who move to the continental U.S. are allowed to participate in elections that are open to other U.S. citizens.

Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders reside in every state in the U.S.

Many Pacific Islanders moved to the U.S. after serving in the armed forces, often in search of educational opportunities for our youth and better economic prospects.  Native Hawaiians established a presence on the west coast throughout the 1800s, often disembarking from merchant ships.
